Celebrate the 175th Anniversary of The New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the largest single-day spectator event held in the State of Connecticut. Hundreds of thousands of people line the streets of New Haven to watch the parade.
The tradition of the New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade was born on March 17, 1842 when a mutual aid organization formed the previous year of about 90 members of the Hibernian Provident Society marched through the streets of New Haven behind a banner made just for the occasion.
The New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade since the mid 1950’s has become one of the most significant Irish events in New England and is the 6th oldest parade in the nation. In 1999 it’s prominence was recognized by the Library of Congress and selected as an outstanding example of American folk life.
This year’s parade is being held on Sunday March 12th at 1:30 pm. The parade route starts at Chapel Street at Sherman Avenue and and ending on Grove Street at Orange Street. The parade route is approximately 1 1/2 miles and about 3 hours long.
Streets around the parade route close around 11:00 am with the exception of Church Street from Chapel to Grove which will be closed from 6:00 am. Click HERE for more information on parking and shuttle bus service.
